This year’s “ocean+climate change” series is will be expanded into “art + ocean + climate change” .
The idea is to include creative aspects of music, poetry, painting, story telling and other creative arts and combine it with the passion to preserve & restore the ocean and climate opportunities. So, please watch this space and provide feedback and input…
The art side may include
- a gig of the Wellington Climate Scientist band at the Whangarei Fringe,
- an art+science visual/music event with Matt de Boer (Climate Imaginaries), Mark Wallis (DJ Poppa Soul) and my wife Barbara Ruhdorfer,
- a specced down, locally sourced version of Gabby O’Connor’s conbcept art,
- offering a safe and supervised space to play NIWA’s Serious Games with locals affected by flooding, sea level rise or drought …
- art+ocean+climate science events in selected coastal schools
- art+ocean+climate workshop with local movers & shakers (a bit what you did a Quarry Gardens a few years back)
- Interactive paintings with Barbara Ruhdorfer and others
- Sculpture like Chris Booth’s Climate Opportunity themed ‘Breath of the World’
- Multimedia Art with Matt de Boer
- Music & Northern Lights style silent discotheque curated by Mark Wallis
- or combinations of the above

We will kick-off with a session on the outcomes of COP28. We have several hapu reps and JL from Nethope from Whangarei attending COP28 this week in Dubai (with 70,000 others …).
After that I thought a cool one would be ‘polynesian navigation’ (PN) , expanding on a PN theme we have done before. On 25. Nov 2023 at the kelp restoration day in Church Bay (Tutukaka) Joeline Busby.’s waka was viewed. She is a descendant of Hec Busby. They have carved a waka and plan to sail from Tututkaka to Tahiti. I was very fortunate to have met Hec Busby and Nainao Thompson at the Doubtless Bay Te Kapu Whetu navigation place in Aurere.
With my dear friends from Tuvalu, I like to do one session on “low lying islands and their response to climate change.”

See the amazing project around Tuvalu’s Digital Twin and the recent agreement by Australia to take on Tuvaluan Climate Migrants.
So watch this space in 2024 …
